Stumped for ideas when it comes to teaching English and making literacy timeslots more engaging and fun for students?
In this week’s blog, we’re sharing some creative approaches to incorporate more English learning into your weekly teaching program using just seven of our many teacher resources.
From daily reading practise to weekly writing improvements, we’re sure one of these ideas will spark inspiration for you!
The best part about using one of our teacher resources is that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel every week to keep things interesting since each resource comes equipped with dozens of different activities and topics and students thrive on habit.
When you find something that works well for you and that students love, just keep working through that resource and building a routine that students can look forward to every week!
Check out these different ideas and approaches:
1. Reading Corners
Add variety and enrichment to your classroom library with our range of reading resources and texts that encourage students to practise reading daily! These resources are also easy to incorporate into weekly lessons in different ways.
- Book Monster Decodable Readers – This resource is great for early year learners who are getting started on their reading journey and are still learning phonics and decoding.
- Reading for Me – This is a fantastic resource for learners to practise reading daily in the classroom or at home, for Years 1–6. Learners are encouraged to read one text a day (Monday–Thursday) and become independent readers!
- The Literacy Box – Assign group reading or partnered reading, or let learners select their own cards from the box (within a colour range that challenges them at their current reading level).
2. Learning Stations
Use our box sets to support learning station planning for literacy timeslots! These hands-on activities make learning fun and help with learned concept retention.
- The Spelling Box – using your spelling list for the week, select four activity cards that allow learners to practise spelling using a taught strategy, or a variety of different strategies!
- The Comprehension Box – select two reading level-aligned texts (one fiction, one non-fiction) and have learners rotate between each text, practising different reading strategies amongst each other (for example, group-reading, buddy reading and taking turns reading paragraphs aloud).
3. Weekly Writing Challenges
Encourage students to get better at different styles of writing (and expand their vocabulary at the same time) with a weekly writing challenge! Use the resources below to equip students with the knowledge ahead of time and teach new concepts.
- A World of Words – Use this resource during a weekly literacy timeslot to introduce students to brand new worlds while taking them on a journey through real-life, everyday subjects designed to interest and engage.
- Primary Writing – This resource provides opportunities for students to read, examine, and write a variety of text types including narratives, recounts, procedures, reports, explanations, and expositions.
