Classroom athletics

Keeping fit and active is a key way to keeping healthy and happy. Hold a weekly/fortnightly/monthly 'classroom athletics carnival' to get students to move, communicate and have fun while encouraging a healthy lifestyle. A classroom athletics carnival can be organised with another class to encourage socialising. You can take a simple approach or go all out! Here are some suggested events to get you started.

Running events

Students run in age groups for varying distances, such as a 100-m, 200-m and 400-m relay. Organise a baton and stopwatch to time events.

Throwing events

Frisbee throw - Each student stands behind a starting line and has three attempts at throwing a frisbee. Mark the landing points and record the student's best attempt after three throws.

Beanbag throw - Students stand behind a starting line and are given three attempts to land a beanbag in an appropriately distanced hoop. Give a score on results.

Softball throw - Students are given three attempts at throwing a softball from behind a starting line. Mark the landing point and record the student's best throw.

Jumping events

Standing long jump - Students stand behind a marked line. Each student swings his/her arms and jumps forward, keeping both feet together. Record the student's personal best out of three attempts.

Running long jump - Appropriate sand facilities are required for this event. From a designated run-up area, students take a running start to a line and jump forward. Mark and measure the landing point from the jump line. Record the student's personal best after three attempts.

Skipping - Students can skip in relay fashion or in individual races. Ropes may be used.

Relays

Tunnel relay - Form teams of 8–10. Teams stand in a line behind each other with their legs apart. Students pass a ball alternately between one team member's legs and over the next team member's head in an under-over motion, with the player at the back running to the front once the ball has reached them. Repeat. The winning team sits when everyone has participated.

Back-to-back relay - In pairs, students stand with their backs touching. They run sideways together to the allotted line. If they separate, they must start again.

Ball games

Kangaroo hop - Students must jump across the designated area while keeping a ball between their knees. Students can hop to another team member at the end of the line like a relay or hop around a cone and back to pass the ball to the next player. This continues until all players have had a turn.
